Site Visit 3: HIV Studies (Mahasarakam Hospital) -- This is a new site visit. We took the IFDS group there. There is a well-known doctor- Dr. Suchart Tongpan- there who runs a group for people living with HIV/AIDS. The IFDS participants really liked the visit. They said they had a chance to speak to nurses who work at the center and with patients. They went to neighboring villages to speak with patients.
Site Visit 4: Tertiary Healthcare & Problems with the System in Thailand (Srinagarind Hospital- Karen Welker)

Past Site Visits
Khon Kaen Regional Hospital: This hospital is very interesting as a contrast to Sringarind Hospital. It is also a tertiary facility, but in poorer condition. It is operated by the Ministry of PH (whereas Srinagarind is run by the Ministry of Education.) It is also known for its emergency medicine innovations. They have a fast-track process for trauma patients to get them specialized treatments sooner. They also started the emergency response system in Thailand- including ambulances, emergency medical technicians, and the 1669 call system (similar to the US 911 system).

|
Baan Dton Mun Community: This is a model community throughout Thailand. They created a self-sustaining community in which they hold workshops for healthy living, substance abuse, and sustainable economy. They also grow their own food and herbal medicine. They have instated strict public health measures, such as no alcohol or smoking permitted within the community.
Khon Kaen Psychiatric Hospital: This was a one-time visit last semester. It could have been good, but the students weren't proactive about asking questions, and they did not see the areas where the patients stay.

|
Wat Pho: This is the temple that Ajaan Supannee goes to. They do some massage, meditation, and Thai herbal medicine here. We started taking students there last semester. They didn't feel there was enough content, so we decided to eliminate this visit.
Wat Khampramong: This is a Buddhist temple that uses Thai traditional medicine to treat patients with cancer.

Past Health Promoting Hospitals: Nam Phong (has an HIV/AIDS patient group) and Kantharawichai Hospital.
